Books
Checkout 19 by Claire-Louise Bennett – “checkout 19 is great for people who like stylish and strange novels & a lot of literary references & want a story about someone growing/becoming a reader/writer & obsessed with the materiality of a printed book”
The Song of the Cell by Siddhartha Mukherjee and An Immense World by Ed Yong – these two sound like worthwhile pop-science reads.
The Book of Goose by Yiyun Li- “clever, witty novel of friendship”.
Bliss Montage by Ling Ma – “small, claustrophobic tales that exist like liminal spaces” (I bought this one already end of the year now)
Trust by Hernan Diaz – I see this one in almost any list and the topic sounds very mature and materialist cool.
Imagining the End: Mourning and Ethical Life by Jonathan Lear – Cool cover and essential topic.
Index, a History of the: A Bookish Adventure From Medieval Manuscripts to the Digital Age by Dennis Duncan – Niche, sounds fun!
Either/Or by Elif Batuman – Need to the read the first one.
Sea of Tranquility by Emily St. John Mandel – fascinating.
TV
We Own This City – “A spiritual successor to The Wire with an even more pessimistic outlook on law enforcement”. Count me in?
Minx – sounds like the vibes of The Deuce (70s, shady).
The Bear – Overcooked was fun. This might be too. Better for the health than actually working in that industry.
My Brilliant Friend – I still need to read the books first though.
The Patient – Because it’s made by the people of The Americans.
This Is Going to Hurt – Miniseries are usually a better time-spender
Music
(Hard to even argument about this, just feelings of interest in my gut. Mostly from the always excellent Quietus)
Animal Collective – Time Skiffs
Grace Ives – Janky Star
The Beths – Expert in a Dying Field
Spoon – Lucifer On The Sofa
Dale Cornish – Traditional Music Of South London
Nwando Ebizie – The Swan
Gi Gi – Sunchoke
Maylee Todd – Maloo
Loraine James – Building Something Beautiful For Me
Emmanuelle Parrenin – Targala, la maison qui n’en est pas une
Omertà – Collection Particulère
Pontiac Streator – Sone Glo
Oren Ambarchi, Johan Berthling, Andreas Werliin – Ghosted
